Through the development of mutually beneficial partnerships with local, state, and federal governmental agencies, we aim to foster the inclusion and political presence of people who historically have lived on the margins of society. Current activities include intervention and service system development and evaluation; public policy development and analysis; and education, training, and research addressing the interface of behavioral health and membership in society. Illustrative examples of this work include evaluation of social engagement approaches to the community integration of people with disabilities, establishing mental health action plans for public housing authorities, enhancing access to responsive care for underserved urban communities of color, and peer outreach as an alternative to outpatient mental health commitment and/or incarceration for people who are considered to pose risks to themselves and/or the community. Throughout these efforts, we attempt to identify and redress social, political, and economic disparities in relation to disability status, healthcare, and opportunities for recovery and citizenship in partnership with the people most affected by these conditions. Partners include the New Haven Housing Authority, the City of New Haven, the Town Green merchant association, various faith communities, EMPOWER New Haven, Inc., and various community agencies (e.g., New Haven Family Alliance, Cornerstone-Also, etc.). Scholar Roles Our program includes collaborations with the Schools of Nursing and Divinity, the Epidemiology and Public Health Division and Child Study Center of the Medical School, and the state of Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, for which Dr. Davidson serves as Mental Health Policy Director.
