  Research

Yale Scholars build research skills through the Program's structured curriculum and practical experience of applying classroom concepts to individual research projects.
By undertaking their own substantive research projects, Scholars learn to develop important research questions, frame hypotheses, collect and analyze data, interpret evidence, and communicate results through oral presentations and written papers. Assistance in the identification, development, and completion of research projects involves close faculty mentoring and support. This tradition has enabled Scholars to be highly productive. Over the past decade, Scholars have averaged three peer-reviewed publications derived from work during their time in the Program.

Research-in-Progress

Scholars are assisted in their research through the guidance of research mentors and their participation in twice-monthly two-hour Research-in-Progress sessions. These sessions enable Scholars to: present their research at various stages of development and completion, respond to colleagues’ questions and feedback effectively in a group setting, critique peers’ research and provide constructive feedback for further development, and communicate clearly and concisely in a group setting, and introduce potential new projects.

Community-Based Projects

Each Scholar is expected to engage in at least one community-based research project that supports the Program’s commitment to improve the health of New Haven. These projects may be done on an individual basis or with other Scholars. Participation in community-based projects will enable Scholars to: apply skills developed in biostatistics, clinical and health services research methods, and community health research; understand the challenges and opportunities of working within the parameters of community-based health organizations, including policy-making boards and community advisory committees, or other collaborative environments; and demonstrate how clinical and health services research can be translated into programs, and/or healthcare policy.
