Yale Scholars build critical research skills through participation in the Program's structured 2-year curriculum and the application classroom concepts to individual research projects. Formal and informal faculty mentoring relationships provide support with the identification, development, and completion of research projects. Generating an independent research project portfolio teaches Scholars to:
• Identify and frame innovative research questions
• Develop testable hypotheses
• Integrate varied methodologies in rigorous data collection and analysis
• Interpret generated evidence accurately
• Communicate results effectively through multiple dissemination strategies including oral presentations and written manuscripts
• Translate novel research findings to clinical, health policy, and community arenas
The Yale approach has fostered high productivity; over the past decade, Scholars have averaged three peer-reviewed publications derived from work undertaken during their time in the Program. Scholars are expected to complete at least two peer-reviewed manuscript submissions while in residence at Yale.
Research-in-Progress Sessions
Scholars, program faculty, mentors, and alumni meet bi-monthly in a forum designed to give Scholars the opportunity to present their projects to the Clinical Scholars community.
These formal sessions enable Scholars to:
• Present their research at multiple stages of development and ultimately completion
• Hone oral presentation skills including the effective use of visual aids such as slides
• Respond to colleagues’ questions and feedback effectively in a group setting
• Critique peers’ research and provide constructive feedback for further development
An informal opportunity exists for Scholars to brainstorm new ideas and solutions to emerging research project challenges with each other. These brainstorming sessions are optional and organized by Scholars.
Community-Based Projects
Each Scholar is expected to engage in at least one community-based research project that supports the Program’s commitment to improve the health of New Haven. These projects may be done on an individual basis or with other Scholars.
The goals of participation in community-based projects include:
• Creating opportunities to apply skills developed in biostatistics, clinical and health services research methods, and community health research to community-based research projects
• Appreciating the unique challenges and opportunities of working with community-based health organizations, including policy-making boards and community advisory committees, or other collaborative environments
• Demonstrating how clinical and health services research can be translated into programs and/or healthcare policy
